Genex Technologies announced on August 26 that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) for developing state-of-the-art medical imaging technology for life-saving brain injury detection. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a critical wound often suffered on the battlefield as the result of explosions, bullets, shrapnel, or other severe impacts to the head. Detecting and treating such injuries early is vital to survival rates because delay in care can lead to loss of permanent functions or loss of life. Walter Reed and Genex are working together to improve the ability for medics to non-invasively detect and estimate the severity of TBI. The US Army Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense (USAMRICD), a sister laboratory to WRAIR within the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, will also participate in this research and development effort.
This CRADA is also supported by the Maryland state government via the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO). TEDCO will provide partial funding in support of the project.
